School Zone Speed Cameras Are Now Live Across Palm Beach County. Here's What's Different Locally.

Drivers passing schools in Boynton Beach and Wellington are now being watched by automated speed cameras, part of a wave of local programs that have taken hold across Palm Beach County over the past year.

Boynton Beach activated cameras outside seven schools last fall, following a 30-day warning period before fines began. Wellington installed cameras at 11 school zones around the same time, and village data presented in May showed a 58 percent drop in speed violations between October and April after enforcement began. Both cities' cameras issue $100 fines to drivers caught going more than 10 mph over the posted school zone limit, with enforcement running from roughly 30 minutes before school starts through 30 minutes after dismissal. Wellington and Greenacres both confirmed their cameras go dark over summer break, since state law doesn't currently classify summer school as a "regularly scheduled education program."

The picture is different in the county's unincorporated areas, which include large stretches of West Boynton and West Lake Worth. A broader plan to add cameras at 40 high-risk school zones countywide stalled in May, when county commissioners declined to advance the ordinance following a Broward County court ruling that raised legal questions about how these programs are structured. County officials haven't ruled out revisiting the plan, but no timeline has been announced.

For now, drivers in unincorporated West Boynton and West Lake Worth won't encounter county-installed school zone cameras, though anyone driving into neighboring Wellington, Boynton Beach, or Greenacres should expect active enforcement.
